Lenten Program for 2008

Offerings For Children and Youth

Nursery

The nursery will be available
for children ages 0-4 years of age.

“Walking With Jesus”

The children will have listening and creative time as they learn about the ministry of Christ, with story and craft activities. Their journey through Lent with Jesus will begin with his baptism, and continue through his crucifixion and resurrection. The themes will include baptism and commitment, sharing and having faith, accepting and loving those who are different, and dealing with and even celebrating things that are unexpected. There will be two classes, divided by age for children in kindergarten through 5th grade.

“Exploring with the Golden Compass"

The Youth, grades 6-12, will explore themes introduced in “The Golden Compass” book and movie as well as the other two books in the “His Dark Materials” series. This controversial series of books is widely misunderstood and offers very rich and meaningful insight into issues of coming of age and growing into faith. In addition to the themes that bolster faith and uphold loving and caring relationships there are also themes that raise questions about the church and the order of the world around us. These themes will be explored in an environment where it is safe to discuss and debate while enjoying fellowship and fresh insights. While reading the books or seeing the movie may help understanding the finer points of the discussion, the course will deal with issues from the books that relate to a broader context. It is not required to have read the books or to have seen the movie to enjoy this offering. This class is also open to adults who are willing to listen and learn from the youth.

- Led by Jamie Ellis, Minister of Youth, Children, and Families

"Encounters With Jesus on His Way to Jerusalem"

For this offering, we will read passages from St. John's Gospel which correspond with the Sunday readings.  We will go in depth from week to week about the stories of who Jesus encountered along his way to Jerusalem.  We will meet Nicodemus, the Woman at the well, the man born blind, and Lazarus.  Where do we see ourselves in the story?  Where do we see Jesus in our lives today?  This offering is open to all.

- Led by the Rector.

“St. Benedict's Toolbox:

The Nuts & Bolts of Everyday Living”

This class will explore how "The Rule of St. Benedict" can be incorporated into our everyday lives. St. Benedict was born into a turbulent and violent time during the 5th century. He chose to bring order out of chaos by creating a monastic community that would live by a set of simple, Christ-centered rules. His influence can be found throughout our Anglican roots. "Find God by being in relationship with one another, he said. Achieve holiness by being normal. Base your faith on the changelessness of God and of God's love and empowerment. Relate in a healthy way to yourself, keep that relationship in its proper proportion and recognize that your role as a Christian is to love God and to serve others" (Jane Tomaine, author of the book as the same title of this class.)  Books will be purchased prior to the class.

- Led by Bess Steverson

“Just Pray”

Returning from last year by popular demand, this group will gather in the labyrinth narthex every Wednesday evening to pray. We will learn about various ways to pray – with beads, icons, listening to music, guided meditation, labyrinth walking, centering prayer – and then experience these acts of prayer. This is a quiet, nourishing time of peace – a time to come and “re-fill your well."

- Led by the Rev. Kathryn Mathewson

Also Available During Lent for All Ages

“Walk to the Church of the Annunciation”
A Lenten Devotional Guide For the Forty Days of Lent

This Lenten devotional is intended to promote our spiritual and physical health.  Although every parishioner of Saint Timothy’s will not be able to be a participant on a  NOLA mission trip to New Orleans we can all support The Church of the Annunciation spiritually, emotionally and physically through use of this Lenten Devotional Guide. Our goal is to walk, run, bicycle or swim 440 miles, which represent the distance from Saint Timothy’s to The Church of the Annunciation.  Each participate will receive a packet with a participant number.  The packet will include cards for you to track and report your mileage, weekly spiritual topics to meditate on and a health tip to reflect on.  We will pool our miles each week of Lent and keep track of our progress on a map in the narthex.  Throughout our Lenten journey, as we meditate and exercise, any thoughts that are revealed to us and we would like to share with The Church of the Annunciation will be collected and sent to them. We will not only be supporting them through our prayers and meditation but we will also be improving our physical health as well.
